This SATA3 (6gbps) drive delivers performance, but also a lot of heat doing so. In a laptop, heat is an especially difficult problem. While the drive, itself, is not to be faulted, everything depends on how well the drive is cooled. Generally speaking, I would not install this drive in any laptop unable to cool the drive to about 110-115F or lower. Yes, many systems are designed to “run hot” but no electronic component lasts as long, that way. So, why risk data, always wondering when the drive finally will go bad?

I purchased a “white label” 750G drive before this one. My laptop didn’t recognize it until I created a new partition, and several attempts to install Win7 to it failed. My laptop recognized this drive immediately and Win7 installed on the first try. I paid more for this 500G than the bad 750G, but this one works and the other one is a paperweight.

It doesn’t come in its original wrapper, but I checked it with cristaldiskinf and I think it was new.

I bought one of these drives, came perfectly sealed and in packaging like it was a new product, opened it up and plugged it in, it was filled with a woman’s personal information, finances, medical records, personal photos, etc. I notified the seller and they sent a replacement. Guess what, still data and files on the new hard drive. I told the seller, but they didn’t see a problem with the practice.I am giving 5 stars, because when I give a 1 star review reporting this practice, the review seems to get taken down for unknown reasons. Maybe a 5 star review will encourage them to wipe the data before packaging these hard drives as if they were new.

No problems with noise or vibrations with this particular drive. Used it on a laptop where I did a fresh install of Win7 followed by Win10 upgrade. I wanted to keep the original drive as a loaded and working spare.

After buying a refurbished Dell Inspiron E5410 laptop computer, which had a Seagate Momentus 180 GB 7200 RPM hard drive with 3GB/S SATA interface and 16 MB of cache, I wanted more speed and performance. For less than 40 bucks, this drive was a solution that was dramatically less expensive than a solid-state drive. Connecting this drive temporarily to a USB 3.0 SATA controller attached to my computer, I used Macrium Reflect Free Edition software to clone the internal 2.5″ disk drive to this one. Then I removed the laptop’s old internal drive and replaced it with this drive. This drive was slightly thinner but since it is secured to its enclosure by two screws and the computer’s SATA connector, the thinner size presented no installation problem. The faster SATA interface and larger cache of this drive, gave my old Dell Inspiron E5410 a faster boot now than it did with the smaller, slower drive. Using Windows partitions, I expanded the usable space on this drive; enabling the computer to utilize its full formatted capacity. The entire process took less than an hour and resulted in a better performing computer with more than twice the available hard-drive storage space. The so-called Prime two-day delivery actually took five days.

A friend of mine owns several older ThinkPads that he is letting his young children use for “distance learning” schoolwork during the novel coronavirus quarantine. His young son dropped one of them onto a concrete floor, which killed the original 320 GB 7200 RPM Seagate drive. I was not able to get the machine to recognize a 2.5″ SSD – That would have required a firmware update which could not be done without a running operating system. So I went shopping for a spinning HDD.This 500 GB drive was recognized instantly by the machine. I installed a copy of Windows 10 Professional Education Edition that I happened to have in my Box O’ Fun. After about four hours of Windows updates and reboots the machine is back in service and working as well as ever. This is a good value if you need a spinning HDD for a laptop.

I was in a serious bind because what I do for work relies on the internet and my previous hard drive died Thursday night. I saw this hard drive on here and ordered it. Not only does it fit perfectly and perform well, but it got to me 2 days earlier then originally expected (came on Saturday). I’m very happy I went with this product

For 20$ you cant beat it. I bought this to replace a dying ps4 hard drive, the machine was crashing at random intervals due to bad platters and sectors on the original drive. This one fit the bill nicely and has been going strong ever since.
Tony –
Installed it very fast. It works great. It was well worth the money spent.
The Final Verdict –
Bought this for a relative of mine since her previous HDD crashed suddenly. She had an old WD 5200RPM SATA III HDD with 16MB cache so this was a big upgrade for her laptop. So far it has been working great with no crashes at all. The drive is a bit noisy but not too overwhelm.Nowadays storage drives prices have dropped drastically at less than $.50 per Gigabyte so unless you’re in a budget and storage is more important than speed/performance, this would be a great purchase.

Cambié el disco duro de mi laptop de 5400 RPM por ese de 7200 RPM y la velocidad aumento mucho, lo malo es que hace mucho ruido y parece usado

Worked just fine from the beginning, windows re-installed without a hitch, and the performance is much better than the drive it replaced. Of course, its not nearly the performance of a SSD, but at the time of purchase, a 500 GB SSD was 4-5 times the price.

I really like the hard drive. It was easy to install and use. Transfers really smooth with no data errors.

Since I installed this, the computer works smoother, boots up faster, which means it runs cooler now too. Of course, this hard drive has better capacity than the original on my computer. The old hd had the same gb but half cache size, half mbps and less rpm than this one. I recommend this

Its hard to rate a hard drive, it either works or it doesn’t. One has to be careful about the spindle RPM because a lot of low priced laptop drives are 5400 rpm rather than 7200 rpm and a 5400 rpm drive stinks, performance wise. I have been a fan of Seagate for years and this is a good drive for the money.

Was happy that this was a brand new drive, exactly what I was looking for and in perfect working order. I would have given 5 stars, but it took a long time to arrive. A week past the final date it was supposed to get here.

I was looking for an inexpensive drive to attach to a Raspberry Pi 3+ via a USB 2.0 enclosure. This worked well.

Seagate drives are my fav. they have a real nitch for quality. I got this driver installed it with no problems and it runs like a champ. I would recommend buying this drive if you need a small drive seeing s its only 500Gb.

Needing to replace my laptop hard drive after 4 years, I purchased this drive. I write this review after months of using it.This is a great hard drive to use in a laptop. If you are replacing an existing drive (provided the existing drive isn’t an SSD), you’ll definitely notice a nice boost in speed, especially if you are replacing a 5400RPM hard drive. That being said, assuming you’ve had another hard drive, you’ll know exactly what your getting out of it.Pros:-Very nice quality for a very reasonable cost.-It’s a very quiet hard drive.-The drive also seems to handle movement (when inside a laptop) really well.Cons: None.

There was no mention of any software being installed on this drive. When i installed it and powered up my laptop, it acted like a new W10 installation. Of course it won’t run right without the correct product key and keeps giving an error message about a missing audio device. Now I’ll have to uninstall it. Don’t need anymore problems.

This hard drive is far better than the ones I bought from Seagate . Transfer rate Max 146 MB/s ,Average 113 MB/s . The Momentus XT ,and Laptop Thin SSHD Max 103-109MB/s Average 82-87MB/s . The raid array with four drives including this one now running as fast as a SSD ,access time ~1ms.Excellent product from Seagate .

This is a good solid economical no frills drive for the bargain hunter. I installed it in a coworkers daughters personal laptop and it worked very well. I loaded Windows 10 and it was up and running in no time. So far I haven’t heard any complaints from. It’s been a couple of months since it was installed.
CaptainBlackton –
I bought 4 of these to put together with zfs. It can split your files up in a way that it can read a single file from all the drives at once, so it can be a lot faster to get your data. It’s been working great so far. I used to run off of an SSD, but I don’t notice any performance loss having switched back to HDD. in general I would always go with an SSD. I just wanted to extra capacity per price of HHD, where the speed doesn’t matter as much if it’s just for file storage that doesn’t get accessed much.

Worked perfect to clone my laptop hard drive!

Does as was promised. I got to replace a Toshiba that failed when dropped low G in my opinion. this has worked fine since put into service about 3 months ago. It also has a good price but When Solid State HD come down in price I will be watching. If my laptop had a smaller HD I would now because of last failure. Hard drives are very reliable in general so you don’t know how much you need them until they fail. As always backup your stuff frequently. I will update if any problems.
