Honestly once I installed the Window 7 start button back(3rd party), and got it configured to my liking, I have to admit I love it. It is on a new machine, and a less than 8 second boot from cold is just amazing.

Hey. It’s Windows 8.1. You either love it or you hate it. I use Classic Shell to get around having to deal with the Start Screen and I have no problems with it. It is faster than Windows 7. With an SSD drive, boot time is about 8 seconds and everything feels instantaneous.

Easy enough to install. Everything worked out of the box.

A lot of people hate on Windows 8. Is it different … yes, but even without addons (which you can get for free) to make it “look/feel” like previous versions of Windows if you leave it in desktop mode its not really THAT different.

Not Microsoft’s best OS, but not to bad either. The made a lot of things better, if only they hadn’t messed up a lot as well. Windows 8 gets a lot of bad comments, but it’s really not that different from 7/vista and I’ve had very few compatibility issues. Biggest problem I have with 8 vs 8.1 is Microsoft’s attempt to become Google with it’s desktop searching, if you don’t like sending all your computer searches to MS you can disable it though. -especially ironic since they attacked Google so much… guess if you can’t beat them, join them.

I bought this to upgrade an HTPC which was running Win7 Home Premium. I did a clean installation on a 1 TB SSD and it couldn’t have been easier. After I installed it and did all of the updates, I did the Windows Media Center upgrade, tweaked all of my settings, and it is fantastic. It is my forth computer to run Win8.1, so there was no learning curve involved. I have two with touch screen, and two without. Is it different from Win7, of course. Is it hard to learn, not at all. It is so easy to customize the way you want it to look and “feel”, and the performance is great.

Ciao!

I think the bad reviews on Windows 8 were before the 8.1 update. The interface is great. There still is a desktop. So what if the Start bar is gone. The Star menu is better.I was skeptical about Windows 8. I believed the reviews about how Microsoft abandoned a desktop OS to compete with the mobile devices and that it didn’t work.Truth be told Windows 8 is Windows 7 with a Start Menu. The menu is more powerful and a mouse still navigates the interface even better. I don’t think the reviews do it justice. If I wouldn’t have helped my friend with his new computer I would not have tried it. His computer hadn’t upgraded to 8.1 yet, so I did have a bad impression when Windows ask to create a Microsoft account every time. My OEM version 8.1 didn’t do that. I am not sure why they put that in the OS. This is probably what upset people and mandated the 8.1 update. With my short experience with Windows 8, I like the interface. And the interface is why I waited so long to buy it. The technology updates will be significant, such as things like Direct X. The fact remains that Windows 8 is Windows 7 upgraded. The traditional OS is still there. My theory Microsoft sees a problem with the iOS surpassing the regular Mac OS. If you design an operating system that works on mobile devices and it differs from the desktop OS eventually the main OS will be in competition to the main OS. Microsoft wants to maintain a desktop OS. Any phone or tablet OS will be more widely used and not compatible with Windows. To win the Game where Microsoft cannot compete with Apple or Android, Microsoft changed the game in which they can compete.

Pro is always the way to go with Windows Operating systems! Especially for business use, you need to, but it just comes more complete with features help you connect with networks and other things. As stated, this is a OS software key to upgrade your system from Windows 8.1 to Windows 8.1 Pro!A little pricey though, so buy if you can when the price is lower!

Like all new things, Windows 8.1 is a little intimidating at first but once you learn it, you’ll really enjoy it. Be sure to leverage the search functionality… it is much better than the old start button way of finding things.

I am giving this product a positive review because of previous experience with it. However, the product sent to me was not legit in regards of being an OEM product for another country, which does not deter how I feel about the product. I would recommend this product if you are looking for alternative to Windows 10. Ignore the negative comments about this product, most are misinformed and or personal biases toward the product manufacturer.

Quick easy installation easy to use like using my old win 7 if wish to switch to the tiles of win 8 one click if want to change back to the win 7 start one click setting up some of the settings took a little practice still 8.1 pro is very user friendly. I had been very hesitant to get a new computer without the old Win 7 OS installed however after trying it on a demo PC I was ready to have on my own PC.

Way better than Win 8 with the new dual environment. I’m using the ReFS format with two Hitachi hard disks and it’s great – very stable so far. A Samsung SSD for the OS & applications has given the box great speed and this OS is just a pleasure to use. Microsoft have improved the usability of Win 8 no end; apparently they listened to their human factors engineers for once and ignored the arrogant execs who think they know better than anyone else. If you’re worried about the usability of Win 8 this version will surprise you with its accessibility. Also (finally!) wi-fi isn’t a nightmare to set up!!

I love this software because it does not have spyware. Everything after this series has spyware in it. In my opinion, (I can’t prove it) I believe software with spyware makes it easier for hackers to hack your computer. A lot of hacking has increased since Windows 10. Take a look at the time period Windows 8 and 8.1 came out; then examine for yourself.

Was able to upgrade my aging Acer AM5640 to a 64bit OS. The 64bit OS allowed a RAM upgrade to 4GB (1GB more) I also added a solid-state drive (233GB) for the OS and direct program files to a traditional hard drive (1TB). Having the solid state drive has improved the Pagefile usage.

Installed without an issue. Microsoft must have fixed some of the installation bugs mentioned by other reviewers before my laptop was put together (January 2015). I opted for the downloaded code. I always worry about needing to enter an activation code, but the worry was unwarranted in this case.

If you need to upgrade this is a Great Product it only took 25 minutes to upgrade a new computer that had Windows 8.1 on it and it took about 40 minutes to upgrade a Windows 7 that had a multitude of problems with Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 – the Windows 8.1 Pro solved all the issues I was having with the Windows 7 upgraded computer, now it works perfectly. The same goes for 2 other computers that had Windows Vista Premium on them. They are working perfectly now with Windows 8.1 Pro and the network works great now that the problem computers (the Vistas and the Windows 7) have the Windows 8.1 Pro on them and so do their attached shared devices. I had wasted a lot of money finding this out the hard way buy buy just Windows 8 a costly mistake and I was ready to throw them away with all the problems upgrading to just Windows 8 caused but that is now past history.

If you need a Windows 8.1 Pro product key and don’t have access to a multi-unit license, this is the way to go. The price is good and the packaging is minimal. An actual DVD is sent, probably not necessary for a system builder after you already have others, but easy to order and easy to receive. If you are building (or re-building) a machine, be sure to put the license sticker on the case.
David Currie –
Windows 8.1 takes some getting use to, its aimed at touch screen, not desk top PC’s, the so called start button added to this version of windows is pointless! It does boot much quicker.

It is perhaps the friendliest version of Windows yet; you can customize it easily, without much trouble. The user is more in control than in other versions, the structure of commands is optimal, supple, logical and easy to adapt to; it accepts and installs smoothly many older software programs which cannot be installed on the later versions. It is not intrusive like later versions. This version of Windows therefore seems to have reached the top of capabilities, just like Word 2007 seems to have done that in the case of MS Office versions. I would recommend this version of Windows.

Came as promised and worked great in order to connect a new laptop to my small office Server Windows SBS 2003. At first I did not think it installed. I got this so i could have windows media center. If i’d known Windows 8 didn’t come with it, i would have stuck with windows 7. I love media center and use it daily to record tv shows, so not having it was not an option. This came as a download code and it was perfect. I had no problems installing it, no problems getting all of my channels including HD channels. Would recommend this for anyone wanting Media Center.
Ugo Donati –
This was as expected. The main additional function was the ability to increase bandwidth. Simply 8.1 keeps some bandwidth for internal use, slowing down other use. With 8.1 pro you get ability to change this. Other functionality was real bonus.

I love Win8! I know all the old school WinKats hate it but my entire family is hooked on it. I personally think this is the best OS I’ve had on my HTPC to date and I started at XP MCE. This is a comprehensive package for those who build and sell systems. This solves the problem of how to customize a new machine to a customer’s needs, desires and preferences. However, there is a learning curve, which Microsoft, albeit a bit clumsily, addresses with its Technet services. Sometimes it takes a while to find the answer I need, but then there is the good ol’ bookmark! Once I find the answer it goes on the bar.I like the fact that I am given a standard OEM license with its attendant restrictions. This gives end-users the option of choosing whether to keep or modify their installed package through Microsoft. As for Windows 8.1 itself, I love it. I had 7, and thought that was a quantum leap from XP, the last system Gates and Co. should acknowledge before 7. Unfortunately, my computer crashed, and I had misplaced my original disc. The price of Windows 7 was prohibitive – especially when compared to this new animal on the shelf. As a retooling 50+ year-old student – and adventurer – I figured what the heck.I liked it from the beginning, although there were many things that I found counterproductive and frustrating. The shutdown button was a huge one. I felt like George Jetson when I wanted to shut down or restart the computer – “Jane! Jane! Get me off of this crazy thing!!! Jane! Jaaaane!”. I never did that, because my wife’s name is not Jane.Coincident to a call to tech support regarding a licensing issue, I learned that 8.1 had been released. I was just starting to learn that the difficulties with Windows 8 I was experiencing were characteristic and not due to lack of experience or mastery of the new system. 8.1 really solved a lot of the problems. Frequent subsequent updates, some major, some minor, have improved facility and functionality tremendously. If you are a frustrated XP user wondering if you should go to 7 or 8.1, I highly recommend the latter. It is, to me, a far more flexible system than 7, and Microsoft has raised its bar on customer satisfaction with its attentiveness to issues. If you are a builder wondering if you should even offer 8.1 to your established customers, i say YES! I am a tiny operation. However. my experience with the OS would behoove me to not only offer, but strongly recommend Windows 8.1 to customers.By the way, I am a music composer and performer. I create my own fully orchestrated performance accompaniment tracks for both my originals and standards. Windows 8.1 has made the process much easier. I use two screens. One is a touch. On the touch screen I have Sonar X3. There I can operate the virtual board and modify the final product. If I hear something that does not sound quite as I want it, I switch to the second screen where I have the song I am working on in a different application. I consider Noteworthy to be the best and easiest notation editor (Windows only). I switch to the Noteworthy screen, and make the changes, save the edits, and export it to midi format. Then I open and continue to work on it in Sonar.I have yet to suffer any data or work loss in this process. So, I say to my musician friends, GET IT!!!

Exactly want I wanted, windows 8.1 and nothing else.I have used Windows 8.1 for a while and it is overall faster, but the start screen is kinda annoying. So far works pretty good with anything that is 64 bit.32 bit software works pretty good as well (anything really if it is not too old).Classic Start Menu will help this feel like normal windows – like windows 7.Comes without any additional stuff installed. Just a straight windows 8. This means that you will have to install any additional software you will need like office, DVD/Blu Ray software, GPU drivers, ect…

An OEM version sold much cheaper than $199 (per Microsoft site). No point buying Windows 8.1 for $94/99 if you can get the pro variant for $132.Packaging can be better.Overall excellent OS – boots within 10s on a hard drive based Intel nuc machine.Much better with the latest update for windows 8.1 which targets desktop users

I do not think I need to do a review of Windows 8.1 Pro. Personally, I love it. Once you get the hang of it, it is quite intuitive. However, I buy OME versions of 8.1 to use on computers that we resell to 3rd parties. We generally use a generic computer case, an Asus motherboard, 8 to 12 GB of Crucial memory and an Intel Core I7 Processor. I also recommend to the end user to pay the additional $9.95 to buy Windows Media Center from Microsoft from within the Windows 8.1 control panel. We build these computers for resell as Media Center Computers. The OME version is only good for one computer. If you are going to be reselling it, you need to remove the Microsoft holographic sticker with the activation key from the disk sleeve and put it on to the back or side of the computer case. We generally do not give this OEM disk to our customers but instead we provide them with a disk that we created. This disk also has the all the device drivers included. This OEM disk is not for non-technical people, as it does not have any device driver for the particular hardware upon which you are building the computer. Some advanced user might be able to download the required device drivers for Windows 8.1. However, they are sometime quite different from the ones used by Windows 7 or even Windows 8.0. This OEM version is less expense than a volume license agreement sold through Microsoft.

This Windows 8.1 Pro software installed without any problem. Be careful, some of the negative reviews are because many newer laptops have the Windows Product code embedded in the BIOS causing an apparent Windows “downgrade”. While doing the install you should get to a point where the installation asks you to enter the Product Code shipped with this product. If this does not happen, you may not be installing the correct version of Windows.

I’ve been a W8 user for a bit, but only on a tablet (my Surface). I just installed it on a built Digital Audio Workstation, and I’m actually pretty pumped about the implications of using DAW software with a 10-point touch monitor and W8, making it possible to emulate a mixing board virtually. I’ve yet to actually do that, but there are YouTube videos showing how that works, and I’m pretty pumped about it. We’ll see!I gave the OEM install 5 stars since 1) the installation was almost completely hands-off and effortless on a built computer (yes, you can create a local account easily), 2) I personally like the new “home” screen layout (most whiners about it are old PC users who really don’t want to change and embrace touch screen technology — at age 64 and a keystroke-using guy, I should be in that category, so I hold optimism that others can change too!), and 3) ’cause boot up and shut down are sooooo much speedier (I will admit I loaded that benchmark a bit with 32 gigs of memory and SSD drives). Anyway, I’m not a MS lackey, but I do think that they’ve done a good job of moving touch screens into the workstation and laptop world, and I predict that that much more intuitive way of interacting with visual content will, eventually, eliminate the mouse as a pointer. Good riddance. It has served us, but one can’t really argue that it is more intuitive than actually touching what you’re pointing at. And, as a added bonus, maybe I can lose the carpal tunnel! 😉

Updated an older laptop with a 240g SSD, a 4g memory stick and 8.1. It flies! Windows 8.1 is a very fast operating system. More secure than Windows 7. You can set the machine up to boot to desktop. It really is easy to use. Within 30 minutes, your working it like a pro.

This software works fine. You can used it to upgrade past versions of installed windows. It is for UK English, but you can change it to US English later in the installation. I personally thought it was interesting how some things are phrased differently. The main reason I bought 8.1 pro verses plain 8.1. Is so I could upgrade to the windows media center for only 10 dollars. So if you think you may want that particular App in the future. You want the pro version. Also Windows Media Center App will not be available in windows 10. This was another reason for choosing this particular version of windows.

My Son had the version above and he had no problems. So the review there is for this product, I downloaded the update for windows 8 which did not work correctly, so I waited for my Son to say his version is working ok I then purchased the 8.1 pro and it seems to be working a ok.

Microsoft prompted the key code was being used by another PC.This is 100 % WRONG AND 100 % INCORRECT. I had to call the 800 number then asked how many computers it was previously installed on. When I answered ZERO the activation process completed with no problems. Do not like Windows 10 because there are too many privacy settings which have to be turned off. Almost like what I have heard about a Chromebook

I self-taught myself to delete my 32-bit Windows 7 operating system and nuke my computer for Windows 8. It’s the only way to upgrade a computer that must bridge the gap between 32-bit and 64-bit. It took several hours and I got to watch a very slow progress bar, but otherwise not too painful. Worth the money for a cheap custom build.

The upgraded Metro UI has some dramatic improvements over the original 8, and is much easier to use. I used StartIsBack (Google it) to give me a start menu on 8, but I find I no longer need nor want it on 8.1. The huge advantage the start screen has over the start menu is that you can have many more of your most commonly-used apps right there in front of you when you click the start button than you can have with the start menu. 8.1 also allows you to boot directly to desktop, eliminating one of the biggest gripes about 8.If you happen to decide you absolutely cannot live with Metro, get StartIsBack. They have an 8.1 version, and it’s only $3 for 3 licenses or $5 for 5, and it gives you a start menu that is indistinguishable from the one in Windows 7. You’ll still get the other 8.1 benefits such as better speed and file manager improvements, and you can have your taskbar how you like it.Don’t believe the naysayers. However you decide to run it, 8.1 is a solid step up.

Love Windows 8.1 Update. I’m an IT Admin of 16+ years and I think this might be the best Windows yet. It integrates with Server 2012 R2 for full remote management, better than Win7 and Server 2008 R2 did, and although I do think the new start screen and Windows store apps could be better integrated into the desktop environment, even after Win8.1 update, it’s still a fantastic OS from an Administrative standpoint. I could see how general users might find the OS annoying, but for those that love Powershell, command line options, and remote administration, Win8.1 and Server 2012 R2 have been Microsoft’s finest, for me anyway.

I used this to upgrade a client’s computer from Windows 8.1 to Windows 8.1 Professional. I literally took just a few minutes to perform the upgrade. One reason you might upgrade to the “professional” software it to enable features such as BitLocker, which you need to comply with HIPPA regulations. (not BitLocker, but hard drive encryption software, and yes I realize there are free alternatives) Also it gives you other networking options such as RDP. Just make sure you understand this will not upgrade your XP, Vista, or 7 machines to Win 8 Professional. It simply converts your 8.1 to 8.1 Pro.

Stable, and supports all modern hardware and software. After using it for a while, I can attest to the fact that it is a major improvement over Windows 7, especially on a tablet platform. With a dozen good alternatives, most of them freeware, to replace the start menu, there is is really no reason to not like Windows 8.1. If you want it to look like Windows 7, you just add a start menu replacement, and it looks and quacks like a duck.

I recently upgraded one of my systems from Windows 8.0 Pro to 8.1 Pro, when this happened, I was truly amazed by the difference in speed and smoothness. I’ve since installed this OEM version of 8.1 Pro in two of my other computers and have been extremely satisfied with the results. I’ve also tried Windows 10, but compared to 8.1 Pro,10 appeared to be slow and encumbering. In my opinion, windows 10 is just trying to do too much and be all things to all people. Unless you really need one of 10’s unique Apps, 8.1 Pro is the only way to go. To me, it was like finding a hidden gem among the river rocks. 8.1 Pro is probably one of Microsoft’s best kept secrets; If too many people found out about it, Windows 10 would have a much tougher battle for acceptance.

I dont understand why people got so confused because Start menu isnt where it was 🙂 These windows are so smooth and luxurious, easily used and they create a new feeling in your pc, as if it thinks about your needs.. and if u still want the Programmes pined up to your quick bar you can always pin them up very easily.. The rest of the pathways (in control panel) are exactly where you knew them only that the option appears whenever mouse goes to one corner of the screen. The clean (keep nothing) installation respects big files in your hard drives (like wow or diablo files) THESE WINDOWS ARE PERFECT

This is a genuine, retail version of 8.1 Pro. I write this because there are lots of “blocked” versions out there (you cannot activate them). You can upgrade this when new windows 10 is released at the end of this year without an extra charge. This is the main reason why I got it in the first place. Even if you dont like new windows tile experience, it is highly likely that you will get used to it. Or, you can use gigabyte smart switch app to add start button if you are addicted to it.

I am not among the Windows 8 haters. I found that after about 30 minutes I was able to tune the OS to my specific uses. It’s stable and fast. The UI metaphor changes are a bold choice that were bound to miff certain users, and I think M$ will dial in a course correction with windows 10. I will say that the subdued window styling although restrictive customizations (I want to be able to pick the font color of the windows) are perfect. In Windows 7 and previous versions of Windows, I felt the borders of the app were fighting for attention when the application’s content should be the focus. Something that apple has had near perfect for years now.The taste test challenge for me was setting up my mother with Windows 8. She transitioned perfectly and has really enjoyed the new style although she is challenged from time to time trying to find certain things. However, the new metaphor emphasizes the edict: out of sight out of mind. I think Windows 8 has less of chance to confuse or even frighten users by exposing all of its aspects rather allowing you to expose yourself to your own workflow saving deeper dives for less frequent use cases.

I see everyone talking about how hard it is to use go buy a 8 GB flash drive (about 12-14$ where i live at least) then go to Microsoft website and look up windows media creation tool. when it downloads it wont take long find the version you are looking for and at this moment it is obviously windows 8.1 pro. download that it is roughly 4GB. so it might take a little time depending on your internet. mine is going to take about 4 or 5 hours. when it is done plug your flash drive into your computer and reboot. depending on your computer type when it starts to boot and show your HP or Dell or whatever your computer is hit either f12 or esc depending on what brand Ur computer was made by and go to boot options and select your usb drive it will boot off that and then just simply install your new operating system. then when it asks for the code you put in the code u where given and wallah you have your new upgraded windows.

Windows 8.1 is the best operating system to date from Microsoft! I play battlefield 4 and windows 8.1 makes for a faster and more fluid gaming and work environment. when i first started using windows 8.1 I didn’t like how Microsoft had taken the start button out now I don’t even care for the start button anymore ( Its not needed in todays windows ) for me anywho .. Windows Backup imaging is still present in file history which I have just discovered It seems many don’t even know this, as iv searched on the web and most are instructing people to use elevated PowerShell and command prompt … Windows apps are great with Microsoft office based apps like, Component one workspace, Text 2, Word creator you can work with Microsoft office doc’s .. The way to go is a clean install and everyone should have a backup hard drive to transfer everything important over into windows 8.1. If your thinking about upgrading you should think again after you research It. It was the same with all windows upgrades from XP on up errors that have to be ironed out by future Microsoft updates you should have win 7 image incase you don’t like the change and or win 8.0 Just incase if you insist on the upgrade style installation .. A full clean install is the only way to go with windows 8.1

If you haven’t made the switch, do it now. Windows 8.1 is the smoothest of all Windows OS’s. I don’t know what all the grip is about. I switched from XP to Windows 8.1 pro and I’m not looking back. All of you people who don’t like the Metro look, just have Windows boot to the desk top. I haven’t had a single crash since I made the switch. My aging computer boots in seconds compared to when it was running XP.

This is a great update, I have been using windows pro 7, and have a touch screen monitor, so wanted to move to Win 8, but held off a little until it got it’s first upgrade. The lead in to this, is the fact that this is an OEM install and will remove all of your programs, save your personal documents, as noted during the installation process. It is a clean install and sets all of your former windows files in a old-windows file. The one file I forgot to backup and store in another location was my Outlook .pst file, but later located it in the old-windows file, the Program did create a current file as of the day of the install. There were a couple of programs that were critical; however, correspondence with the vendor provided a new registered copy with all the options. Many other programs that I had on board were eliminated and I have found that they were pas·sé. It has been enjoyable building the new Start screen and adding programs I need.

The product supplied is *NOT* the full version. It is an OEM system builder version. This is in practice not likely a big deal – the OEM license conditions have changed from Windows7 and are more ‘friendly’, but it is nevertheless not as advertised. In every other respect, it’s Windows8.1 and is a decent OS once you get psst the interface.

I only needed this upgrade for getting a laptop connected to our company domain. I’ve upgraded 3 tablets from 8.0 – 8.1 – 8.1 Pro and attached to our network.Very easy to do, yes takes a little time to download.MS has flexible license which allows reinstall if hardware fails.Bottom line – if you are wondering if you need this upgrade, then you don’t need it.if your computer needs to connect to AD, or you need to run VM’s than you need this upgrade.I see people complain about the cost, well consider this – there are pro and standard versions of the software, would you prefer that all version were Pro and you had no choice? $100 for an O/S is not a bad price, considering how many years you will use it for.
C. Leavitt –
Windows 8.1 does a good job of polishing the new Windows functionality added in Windows 8. Windows 8 was a little rough around the edges in some ways.Windows 8 and 8.1 are basically improved versions of Windows 7 that also have the ability to OPTIONALLY run Windows Store (tablet/touch optimized) apps as well. The benefit of this is that it gives you the ability to use one OS and set of applications on any device including a multi-monitor desktop, laptop, tablet, or some hybrid combination of those. There is a bit of a learning curve with Windows 8.x, but once you spend a little time with it and configure it for the device it’s installed on, you can move seamlessly between traditional keyboard/mouse optimized desktop programs and full screen touch/tablet optimized apps on the same device depending on what you need to get done. You can even have a tablet that plugs into a docking station and becomes a multi-monitor desktop. This isn’t something that can currently be done with other platforms because the OS only does desktop or touch, but not both.Windows 8.x also has the OPTION to sync certain settings to the cloud so that they can be synced to other devices if the option is also enabled on those devices. This includes things like browser favorites, browser tabs, start screen layout, wallpaper, and plenty of other stuff. These can be enabled or disabled individually (or all at once) per device. Microsoft SkyDrive cloud storage is also built in to the OS. This allows you to save files in your SkyDrive folder and have them automatically show up on other devices that are linked to your SkyDrive account. It’s very fast and convenient. I rarely need to use a thumb drive any more. SkyDrive is free and currently has the best cross platform compatibility of all the cloud storage providers. All of the additional cloud storage/syncing functionality in Windows 8.1 is tied to using a Microsoft account to log in. This is nothing more than an account that is tied to various MS services. The other reviews that claim that you MUST use a Microsoft account with 8.1 are simply not correct. During the install process (or when adding new accounts) it will prompt you for an existing Microsoft account login. If you don’t already have one or if you don’t want to use one there is an option to “create a new account”. From that screen you can either create a new MS account or select the option to use a local login. In addition, all of the related cloud sync/storage functionality in Windows 8.x is completely optional even if you do use MS accounts instead of local accounts. You can simply save your super secret documents to the local “my documents” folder instead of the SkyDrive folder if you don’t want that document stored on the cloud. SkyDrive is simply for documents you WANT to make available on other devices or remotely, not to store the entire contents of your hard drive. It’s a shame to see people giving a product 1 star and bad reviews because of their own ignorance.Having said that, the Microsoft account functionality is actually very useful. I didn’t fully appreciate it until I got a new computer (tablet) recently. After starting it up for the first time and logging in with the MS account I use on my other computer (desktop), my new Windows tablet was already 90% of the way configured the way I like it. Various Windows settings were copied in, my wallpaper and start screen layout were synced. It prompted me to download and install a list of Windows Store apps that I currently had installed on my desktop. My browser favorites, email accounts, calendar, and lots of other little details were synced over already. The only thing I had to do manually was install the desktop programs I wanted to use on my tablet. I have never had a new computer configured and ready to go so quickly. In the past, for me, getting a new PC configured the way I like it is an all day process. If you are super paranoid and believe that MS is helping the government spy on you any more than any other company obligated to cooperate with search warrants or the Patriot Act then use a local account instead of a MS account. For more rational minded people, just don’t save any highly sensitive data in your SkyDrive folder…or any cloud storage…or Facebook…or anywhere else on the Internet. As far as backwards compatibility goes, Windows 8.x will run pretty much everything that runs on Windows 7. I use a lot of diverse software and I have yet to encounter anything that ran on Windows 7 that won’t run on Windows 8. That goes for hardware such as printers as well. Some of my favorite options that Windows 8.x adds…- Improved multi-monitor support for when I’m working.- Ability to run Windows Store touch/tablet optimized apps and games for when I’m not working.- Miracast support for streaming my screen wirelessly to my TV.- Ability to run tablet/touch apps “snapped” along side the desktop.- Built in SkyDrive storage for files that I want to share with other devices.- Cloud synching options for various settings with other devices.- Improved task manager.- Improved file copy dialog with pause/resume support.- Start screen/live tiles. I didn’t like it at first but it grew on me.Some cons…- Windows 8 and 8.1 have a bit of a learning curve if you are coming from previous versions of Windows. Mostly, you just have to learn how to navigate the new Windows Store touch/table optimized apps.- The Windows Store is still fairly new and it doesn’t have all the apps you will find on other tablets like an iPad or Android tablet. However, it will run any of the traditional desktop programs that Windows 7 runs so while it’s currently short on tablet apps it wins on the desktop program side.***** Updated *****If you want to optimize Windows 8.1 primarily for “desktop use” here are some things you should do out of the box…1) Set your default programs for pictures, music, and video files to the equivalent desktop programs instead of the touch optimized apps.Move mouse to upper right corner of the screen to open the Charms Bar >> select “Settings” >> select “Change PC Settings” >> select “Search and Apps” >> select “Defaults”Change the following items:- Music Player = Windows Media Player- Video Player = Windows Media Player- Photo Viewer = Windows Photo ViewerSetting these programs (or other installed third party desktop programs) as your defaults will prevent you from “getting kicked out of the desktop” when you open a music, video, or image file. A lot of people complain about this, but it’s really just a matter of configuring Windows for the device you are using.2) Install your favorite desktop programs so you can do something useful. Too many people just play with a stock Windows 8 PC in a store and assume that the desktop doesn’t do much anymore. The desktop still does everything that the Windows 7 desktop did, but just like any other version of Windows you need to install the programs that you intend to use before you can start doing the things you want to do.3) Configure the Start Screen. Take the time to learn the new Start Screen and organize it to your liking. Unpin the touch apps if you don’t need them and pin the desktop apps you use frequently. For desktop users, the new Start Screen isn’t really any better or worse than the old Start Menu. It’s just different. If you set it up right you can find and launch your programs just as quickly (if not more quickly) than you could in any other version of Windows.

I find every update Microsoft has been making these days to be vast improvements over their previous deployments. Many people don’t like change and thus rail upon the changes Microsoft has been making recently. Those same people will run out and get a Mac and talk about how great it is even though they are taking on massive changes. It’s about choice. People complaining about Microsoft’s changes aren’t choosing the changes and thus are angry and rail against them. As a technician, I will say there is nothing special about what Mac is doing in recent years. I am a child of change and celebrate it when it’s an improvement. There is nothing but improvement coming from Microsoft these days. It may be hard for those who don’t like change, but they are great improvements none the less.I will say that the start screen is clunky and not intuitive with a mouse and keyboard. Understandable since it was designed for a touch interface. I have to say this was Microsoft’s primary, and in my opinion, only mistake with this OS; taking away our choice to have a start menu. Install Stardock Start8 or Classic Shell and that is resolved quite quickly. This shouldn’t be necessary, but c’est la vie. If you haven’t used the screen with a touch device and truly given it a chance like you did an iPad the first time you picked one up, you will be amazed at how great the interface is when used as intended. It is faster, more secure, and more modern than Windows 7 and have had nothing but reliability and speed from the OS.

With the smallest amount of effort, you can make it appear nearly identical to windows 7. Installed this on my new build and haven’t looked back since.

Bought this after finding out that my PC was slow because it could only use 4 out of its 8 GB RAM due to using 32b Win 7 instead of 64b. The cost was about the same to upgrade to Win8.1 but had reservations due to some of the bad press because of the change to the Start Menu etc, but I am surprisingly impressed. For a start my PC is massively quicker and I’ve managed to find some clips on the web to show how to configure Win 8.1 so you can use it with the traditional desktop. As with most MS products it does have its irritations, some of which I’ve managed to resolve via ‘Googling’ for help, some are still annoying, but overall I still give it 5 stars. One thing I would say, when upgrading to Win8.1 it saves a copy of your Windows folder which should include all of your files so you shouldn’t have to spend a weekend backing everything up to external HD’s like I did.

Good actual legal Microsoft product. So often Internet sales are questionable at best. Many other sellers have sent Spanish language cards, with no indication of the language change, and software with restrictions which they did not adhere to in the sale. (I.e. Windows with a license restricted for use by a licensed PC refurbisher sold as a stand alone. This was legitimate Microsoft packaging and product. Thanks!

I am very happy with this Windows 8.1. I previously used Windows 7 for years and is very good system of several aspects such as stability. This if you compare it with windows XP or Vista. I do not know really what most people complain of this operating system 8. Personally, I find very excellent. Startup time Faster than the previous Windows 7 ِ.Also windows 8 dealing with the hardware is very excellent I did not encounter any difficulty with my pc HardWare . True, there are some changes to the New look and I start menu and other things. but were not such a big problem . for me An excellent operating system .for those that take a moment to learn it., They will find that Windows 8.1 wonderful.

Microsoft finally got something right. I originally got this for my gaming computer, but now that I have been using it for a while, I realized that Microsoft has finally released an OS that is all around better and easier to use than Apple. I couldn’t believe it at first, but Windows 8 switched me. I barely even use my MacBook anymore.

Before I buy the key card I wrote that my computer meets all the requirements and asked the seller if I bought the key from you is there any guarantee that it works they replied to me that It will work. I paid $161.74 for The key card witch is a bonch of numbers and letters that it was MAILED TO Me. I followed the instructions and added windows 8 pro and the media center to my computer.

This system is just as easy/advanced as you can get. Using the remote desktop lets me access my home pc with the Windows 8 touchscreen controls. It is perfect for a desktop and it’s perfect for remote touchscreen access. I couldn’t imagine a better system for today’s technology because it’s perfect for desktops or tablets. In the past, Microsoft has been falling short with no innovative builds. This takes every intuitive interface and incorporates it into a solid system build. To summarize, this is perfect for any device.

I was not excited about switching over to windows 8 after hearing various reviews, but I think 8.1 has resolved some of those issues. If you are familiar with operating Win 7, then 8.1 should not be too much of a pain, once you find out how to dig underneath its slick surface…..

I like everything that 8.1 has changed/improved on from 7.The hate train is all disinfo or their complaints have been addressed in the 8.1 update.OEM install was exactly the same as previously with win7.Aesthetically, I like the way 8 looks and functions. OS feels snappier than 7. Love the little changes; Task Manager is way more helpful displaying a ton more info.Everything just works. Not a single issue yet.I did instantly uninstall the included default apps that windows includes. This is a workstation I am using…not a mobile device. Anyways, very happy with 8.1 Pro 64bit.

Buon acquisto!

Re seller: very fast delivery, product as described. DVDs (64 and 32 bit versions) and a product key in the box. The licence is transferable if you change devices. So very happy with price, product and delivery. As regarding Microsoft chat support (should you need some) it is total roulette. Sometimes you get a great support, sometimes the person on the other end is plain stupid. I had to transfer 2 licences to new machines, once the support was fantastic, the other time absolutely disgraceful, it took over 6 hours and four reps to get a job done that should have taken max 1 hour. But it seems Apple is moving in the same direction so sadly the choice is rather limited…

Cheaper than buying the DVD. It’s a bit of a pain to convert it to ISO to install to the mac, but if you’re savvy enough to do that, then you shouldn’t have any problem. At first I hated 8.1, but then I bought Startisback for $3 and Windows 8 now looks like Win 7 with all of the speed of 8. Highly recommended.

This is running my gaming system well. I don’t understand the fuss about windows 8. Maybe microsoft simply tried to evolve too quickly for the consumer to accept. It is taking me some getting use to but with some clicking around I am figuring stuff out reasonibly fast. Also this OS draws less from the processor helping your games run more efficiently. Check out the Linus tech tip video on this on UTube. He explains things well and does some tests on windows 7 vs. windows 8 . Of course I wish it was cheeper. Oh well. I am happy with this choice. Install was a snap. Using my ssd as a boot drive, windows 8.1 is loading around 5 seconds.
PinkyAndTheBrain –
Was dubious at first – a legit MS key for under a fiver?? But, was worth a punt as I needed to run some old software windows 8.1 prof as it would not run correctly on Windows 10. Made the purchase and the delivery timeline stated within 1-2 weeks. Decided to go ahead downloading and setting up the Windows 8 install onto a USB flash drive (direct from Microsoft) despite this possible delay. By the time this process had completed, the install key had been sent to my email. So, don’t believe the delivery time – in my case it only took a matter of hours. Windows 8.1 installed, setup and activated ok.Thank Media Center! Fast delivery, product exactly as described, great price – five stars!

Had some difficulty with my peripherals. At first it did not recognize my scanner and did not install all the capabilities of my duplex printer, and had some trouble until I solved these shortages through the internet. I would have expected that that such a sophisticated operating system would have automatically solved these shortages. Otherwise I am well pleased with the program

Amazing operating system. Upgraded from Vista and can’t believe I waited this long to do so. Makes my older Computer peppy again!

I have finally got a basic (very) understanding of the interface. It seems to me that the initial screen is all about show and flash and it contains very little that’s of use to a person who wants a computer. Below that screen is the real access to computing. It looks similar to win 7. Many have mentioned the lack of a proper start menu and I agree with all they say. Maybe the next manifestation of windows will return to that facility. I hope so.Win 8 is definitely faster than 7. Once you get past all the flashy stuff you have a computer that looks very similar to win 7 and performs quite well.I’m pleased I bought it and hopefully once I have a better understanding of it I may be able to power up straight to the win 7 look alike interface.

I’m not a techi, but was able to replace Vista, (not update). Box has both 32-bit and 64-bit disks included. I have a Dell Inspiron 1720 laptop, bought 2007. I adjusted the drive sequence to CD/DVD first (not diskette), then HDD etc. and previously saved my important files on a flash drive. When Windows 8.1 completes it saves your personal files in a file named ‘windows.old’. I checked Youtube, Ref: Upgrading Vista to 8.1. Everything so far seems to work well. My new printer is now on Wi-Fi. This full-version Windows 8.1 is worth every penny.

I was really unsure whether to buy Windows 8. I basically needed a pro version of Windows to get in-built disk mirroring. The choice was Windows 7 or 8.1. I bit the bullet and went for 8.1. It was a good move :-)It’s graphically much more pleasing. The in build apps are great. I use Bing Finance and it is brilliant. It is different to Windows 7, but it works fine without a touchscreen. People do moan about the differences, but I genuinely see them as improvements. I’m glad I upgraded.

Let’s go Brandon –
I keep hearing how much people HATE Windows 8 and 8.1 etc. I got it and I HATED it too, then I took a class on how to use it, now I love it. Way more stable than my Windows 7 and the innovations are very welcome. I still HATE microsoft making us pay for every new version. I’m going with Apple for now on just because of that. I like the Apple OS too. I like even more I do not have to EVER pay for a new OS even more.

The product came as a simple disc in a plastic slip case, containing the files (such as the ISO) needed to install the OS. These can be downloaded from Microsoft’s own website. The important part is the product key: This was on a piece of adhesive-backed paper inside the slip with the disc, and could be peeled off with the intent to be stuck to the side, back or underneath of one’s computer after use. It also included a printed set of instructions on how to install it.I believe that many people buying this in this day and age will be installing Windows 8 on top of Windows 10, so allow me to go through my experience. First, if the installer gives an error after agreeing to the EULA, paste the files from the disc onto your computer, find the installer in the Sources folder and start the process through that. Second, you will want to do a custom install and install it to the same partition that Windows 10 itself is on (which is likely to be the only partition with enough space to hold the OS anyway). This is necessary as it will not work otherwise, so back up any important files to an external drive beforehand as it will format the drive completely. Finally, don’t panic if your wireless thing only says ‘no connections available’ and only gives options for ethernet. W10 drivers aren’t compatible with W8 ones, so you’ll need to download all missing drivers other an ethernet connection (likely directly into the back of your router). The safest place to do this is Intel’s own site: allow it to scan your computer for missing drivers and install all updates and downloads it offers you (aside from any unrelated programs you don’t want to install). Once done everything will be working smoothly, but I recommend restarting just in case.

Fast and easy.

i had some problems with programs because i didn’t remember where the original installation disks for that software was but the install was easy and smooth

I love OEM software! No packaging and no downloads.Windows did an almost great job with the install. Its quick, no grandma install messages (click yes if you want to… click yes if you want to…. click yes if you want to… click no if you want to proceeed… *#&%#!)However, its seems to want to continue installing on smaller and smaller subpartitions if you leave the disk in the drive after the initial install, which made me feel a little silly at the end of the day.The product itself needs work.

Coming from using MacBook Pro for the past 4 years, I haven’t really used windows too much. After seeing windows 8 on a family members’ touch screen laptop, it just looked completely confusing. I didn’t like it at all. Couldn’t really navigate it well especially since I didn’t really use windows 7 either. But I decided to go ahead and get this for my new PC build because it performs better than windows 7. After using it, it only took maybe a few days to a week to get used to it. I actually like it now. Not as annoying as it was the first time I saw it. You can tell it’s built more towards touch screen computers. Only gripe I have is really just a windows thing since I’m coming from Mac. When ever I plug in a different audio output source it doesn’t automatically switch over to it like it does on Mac. So I have to go all the way to control to change it. I just pinned control to my task bar since I have to go to it so much because of other things with Windows. Other than that it’s nice.

Bought this hoping it would be legitimate and work fine. it arrived in a letter from Bulgaria with a barely even basic set of instructions. It had a link to the microsoft website where you can download Windows 8.1, a product key, and them asking for positive feedback (must have been satire, seriously.). Dodgy, I thought, but there was a product key and they seemed fairly polite. When I downloaded Windows 8.1 and began the set up, I tried using the product key and it did not work. I even tried it with Windows 8 and other forms of Windows 8.1 but still nothing. This is a complete and utter con and no one should buy from these con artists ever.

I installed the Windows 8.1 Pro primarily to install Visual Studio on a new PC. I heard a lot of issues about 8.0. I really appreciate the 8.1 Pro with the only Issue, their Image Backup procedure is significantly different from Windows 7. They obviously are encouraging ‘restore points’. Otherwise it is beautiful. I’m looking forward to getting a copy of Windows 10……

Windows 8.1 not so much, but that horse has been well beaten. I need the RDP client for remote access, and the $90 is about the same as the paid remote services, but they have to renew every year. And, RDP still has the “factory built in” advantage in performance.
